The "workbench" type lights you get at places like B&Q are usually 500w, which is equivalent to a redhead IIRC. We used two of those on a shoot last month, they worked very well for what we used them for:

Of course, you don't get barn doors and gels just burst into flame so they're a one trick pony. They work best sat on a flat surface, or a cheap human light-stand works too.

Since you'll be in the DIY store, also get a couple of pairs of the thickest gardening gloves they have. These will be good for your light handlers. Get a big sheet of polystyrene you can use as a reflector, and possibly flagging if it doesn't melt.

I'm sure you'll be glad to know that Robert Rodriguez used DIY workbench lighting in El Mariachi.

I bought 4 of these - http://www.homebase.co.uk/webapp/wcs...tegoryId=51339 - sans motion detectors, and a two pairs of really thick gloves for about ?25 ($50). If you just need to illuminate something, they do the trick. In terms of budget there is no more cost effective way i know.

In fact, I'm leaving the country for a few years next week, so if anyone wants the lights they are welcome to come round and pick them up (from Statford, East London).

Brisbane. Never been there (never left europe before) but i've heard it's nice. Was offered a job there and it's quite a good time in my life to move, before i have kids and all that goes with that. Fully to intend to come back in 2-4 years time. Hopefully with a TV script under my arm.
