The "workbench" type lights you get at places like B&Q are usually 500w, which is equivalent to a redhead IIRC. We used two of those on a shoot last month, they worked very well for what we used them for:

Of course, you don't get barn doors and gels just burst into flame so they're a one trick pony. They work best sat on a flat surface, or a cheap human light-stand works too.
Since you'll be in the DIY store, also get a couple of pairs of the thickest gardening gloves they have. These will be good for your light handlers. Get a big sheet of polystyrene you can use as a reflector, and possibly flagging if it doesn't melt.
